TEMPORARY SECTION:
Amery Scott are in the exciting process of setting up a department in London to deal with property purchase, sale and letting in mid-Italy, where we have a satellite office in the beautiful area north-west of Rome, originally known as Etruria or nowadays Alta Tuscia.
This lovely hilly region, just an hour from the Mediterranean and mostly in the Province of Viterbo on the borders of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio (the region around Rome) is less well-known to Brits than Tuscany, but has superb countryside with attractive and surprisingly affordable property, both to buy or rent. This is a lively, prosperous but uncrowded region where it's usually sunny and where visitors from the UK are still treated as welcome guests.
Centred on beautiful Lake Bolsena - the largest volcanic crater lake in Europe, with sparkling clean deep water about 8 miles across - surrounded by forest, olive-groves and vineyards, few people from the UK have yet discovered how much this region has to offer. In the area there are numerous fantastic places to visit: palaces and villas built by Roman Emperors, Popes and cardinals. Castles, spectacular places to walk or drive, such as a new vertiginous Tibetan foot bridge, the highest in Europe, spanning a deep valley between two villages. A semi-ruined Roman amphitheatre you have never heard of, which is still in occasional use nearly 2,000 years on. And the food and wine....
Nearby are dormant volcanoes higher than the highest mountain in Britain. Meandering lanes lead to unspoilt medieval hill-top villages, many with castles, almost all boasting their own delicious wine and food in friendly, charming family-run restaurants everywhere at a fraction of the cost of Northern Europe. National parks in the Apennine mountains, snow-topped in winter, with bears and wolves are less than two hours away. Wild boar, porcupines and deer are nearly everywhere.
Visit the dramatic clifftop Etruscan capital of Orvieto, with its renowned food and wine, a winter Jazz festival, its stunning Gothic Cathedral and underground tunnels. Discover the delights of Siena, Florence and Rome with their incomparable art galleries, museums and historic architecture, all within easy reach by rental car or train. Many villages here put on summer evening sagras: street food festivals offering local food and wine often combined with retro rock concerts, where the tables are usually served by the local children and teenagers, each village trying to out-do the next. All this with the unique charm and style that Italy is famous for.
With frequent, affordable direct flights from London and other European capitals to 3 convenient airports: Rome Fiumicino, Rome Ciampino and Perugia - as well as comfortable, high-speed TGV trains from Milan, Florence and Rome - Alta Tuscia is easily accessible from almost everywhere in Europe and makes a wonderful holiday base or second home for making day trips or overnight visits to other famous parts of Italy, such as the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Sicily and Sardinia.
